Published

Bug of the Month: Cyclospora cayetanensis

Summer is a great time for fresh fruits, vegetables, and outdoor gatherings. Unfortunately, it is also peak season for Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that causes an intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis. The parasite is commonly linked to contaminated produce and water.

🚨Current Outbreak Update

  • More than 843 confirmed cases have been reported across 31 states.
  • More than 1,500 additional suspected cases are being analyzed.
  • Michigan has reported especially high case numbers, with other clusters identified in Ohio, New York, Texas, and Illinois.
  • Investigators have not yet identified a single food source responsible for the outbreak.

🛡️How to Protect Yourself

  • Wash fresh fruits and vegetables under running water.
  • Remove bruised or damaged sections before eating.
  • Refrigerate prepared produce promptly.
  • Cook produce when possible; Cyclospora is destroyed at temperatures of 158°F or higher.
  • Consider frozen fruits and vegetables during periods of increased outbreak activity.

Hydration Corner

One of the biggest dangers associated with Cyclospora infection is dehydration due to diarrhea. Proper hydration is essential.

Hydration Tips

  • Sip fluids throughout the day.
  • Replace electrolytes using broth or electrolyte-containing beverages.
  • Include water-rich foods such as soups, smoothies, and melon.
  • Increase fluid intake during hot weather.

Watch for Signs of Dehydration

  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Dark urine
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced urination

Seek medical attention if symptoms become severe.
